Questions get asked all the time about the general classing (T1-7), so this thread is a common place for people to ask questions about this.

Basically it works like this. Each car has a "base" class. For the S2000, for instance, it's T6. That's the class for the car stock, with street tires. Here are the common things that move up classes, using an S2000 as an example:

Moving to race tires moves you up one class (T5).

Moving to slicks moves you up 2 (T4).

Adding power moves you up a class once it reaches a certain %. Now this bit is a little vauge, because it depends on the car, really. The hard and fast rule is if you add a turbo or supercharger to a car that's NA, it moves you up 1 class. If you don't add FI, but somehow got an S2000 to 300 crank HP, it would move you up a class.

If you reduce weight a large amount, generally 200lbs or more, it moves you up a class.

So for example, a supercharged S2000 on slicks is a +3, so from the base of T6 you're moved to T3.

There will be some changes to base classing (perhaps) and some refinement of this for 2005, but those are the basics of the T classing as they stand now. There is room in this system for some "latitude", and I apply it as needed.

Any questions, this is the place to ask them.

Ok so coilovers and other suspension doo-dads don't move you up a class?

Is there a listing of cars and their classes?

Did the car start with springs-on-shocks, or did it start with leaf springs? That could move you up, depending. If you're just improving the suspension there, and you're not a full-race setup, it won't move you up. If you're changing the suspension massively, it will.

Name a car, I'll give you a base class. There's no list anywhere right now.

Nissan 240sx 1993. 137hp on the dyno, all stock under the hood. Street tires.

It started with shock and springs but now has coilovers and pillowball mounts. Hemijoints on rear upper arm, rear traction rod, rear toe rod, and front tension rod. A sway bar in the rear and a gear type LSD with stock gearing.

Its all for naught though, we got killed in T7 by a 88 mustang on Sunday @ BW.

T7. for sure, no moveup there.

You got killed by the stock mustang at BW, but you'd kill the mustang at Streets. BW rewards power, as you know. T7 should be a very competitive class for you, I'd think.

Note for anyone other than wahoo following this specific instance; the mustang in question is far enough from stock to upclass, based upon the addition of coilovers to a non-coil on shock car, additional bracing, and the addition of brembos to a under-braked car.

Hi John,

I noticed that I've appeared in both T1 and T3 with my Van Diemen.  How is this possible?  Seems like I should be in T1 with Lance and the Radicals.

You're right, T1 is where the car belongs, but I figured you'd have a better shot in T3 is all

Thanks for trying to help John, you're right about me being better off in T3, but I would never hear the end of it from Lance  Besides, I'm statrting to get comfortable in the car and data analysis showed 4 seconds left in the car at BW which would have made for a fast time on Sunday.  I can't wait for TH.

John, I noticed that my Challenge Series pts. are short (maybe just not current?).  I come up with 34pts. total (two 10's two 4's and a 6).  Thanks.

BTW, how's the Ultima coming along? Ready for TH?

Steven

The challenge series points are not up to date Steve. It sometimes takes a while for them to get updated.

Can't update the points with Buttonwillow until we know all thd classing is right for the event, so there's always a few weeks lag time, at least

Speaking of classing, please keep Craig in Stock class, despite his RA1s! ;-)

Too late, I already emailed a list of classing corrections to Mr Wurth.

However, the mystery drive in Richard's car, one Mr Bitterman, shouldn't be eligible for MOD points )

If I was going to get serious about racing in a class at what point would I be bumped into the next higher class? R compounds? Another 70hp? Just thinking for 05 here... =)

Moving from street tires to R-Compounds automatically moves you up 1 class. Increasing hp by 70 would definitely be an upclass too, and it would put you in T5 against DOT-R S2000's. That would be a tough class for your car, I think...

Mike, Don't worry about it.  Doesn't change what group you drive in (all based on experience), and John will classify the car for you when he posts the results if you choose timing.

Richard's right. Sorry, been really busy with all the events we've had recently (and real work). You would have been T6 under the old classing, now you'd be T8, if stock. It'll be fixed post event, no worries.

T9 on street tires. 160hp, right? That wouldn't be competitive in T8 against a RX-8 with the power difference.
