Given the 'unforseen' incident at WSIR, I likely will get a full roll cage for the S2000, since my Honda is seeing a lot of track time.

Speaking of...does anybody know what the status of the driver of that car is? I heard he was conscious and talking, which was a huge relief, but I'd like to know if the driver is doing okay...I saw it all happen from the grandstands and was by far one of the worst accidents I had ever seen.

Driver actually responded to the SoCal EVO forums! He's doing okay, from what it seems.

That is a HUGE relief...he only has a headache and sore muscles??
One thing that really disturbed me was how long it took for a paramedic to get to the scene...aren't we required to have one on site at all times during these events??

Yes, and the paramedics must have been there, though I wasn't at the event so I don't know what happened in this instance. I'll ask Aaron what was up with it.

The driver seems to be okay, he is actually shown here in the picture above, he's the tall guy with the light grey shirt, the car was a fully built racecar with a cage and all the required safety equipment, definitely a good thing to have in this case.
Moti.

Man, after seeing that wreck it has me seriously considering a cage. Anyone know of a shop in SoCal that does installs...preferrably on the west side?
In other news, I have some in car video from the event on Saturday...nothing spectacular, just a few clear hotlaps, and a compilation of traffic/point-bys.
If anyone is interested, let me know what you were driving and I'll see if I have any video.
For what it's worth I was driving a silver R32, and ran predominently with white, but did a few laps with blue as well.

I have the answer to this question now. The short answer is that medical was immediately at the crash assessing the driver. The long answer follows:
As event organizers who are committed to always having emergency medical personell at every event, we have 2 choices in our approach. We can either have an Ambulance on site, or we can have a fire/rescue truck staffed by EMT's (same as ambulance drivers) on site. At different tracks we make different choices between the two based upon specifics of the track. At WSIR we choose fire/rescue over an ambulance.
We do this because serious crashes are more likely at a track like WSIR, and fire/rescue can cut a car open to extract a driver, which an ambulance can not. They're also, obviously, much stronger at putting out car fires. Since fire/rescue is staffed by EMT's, once you can be removed from the car, they can administer the same aid/sabilization efforts that an ambulance can, so there's no disadvantage there. If you are seriously injured at WSIR, the amulance is not going to drive you to Lancaster, they are going to call a chopper to airlift you to the trama ward. For that reason, there is no advantage to using an ambulance over fire/rescue.
The driver in this case was not seriously injured, so a flight was not called. He was assessed by the EMTs from the FR truck, found to be ok, and an amulance was called from in town to take him for a "safe side" assessment at the hospital. As you know, he's fine and he's been emailing me about his plans for his new Evo today, actually
Hopefully this explaination reassures you about the safety planning at the event. What may have appeared to be a long wait for an ambulance to assess the driver actually occured after the driver had been assessed and found to be ok. He would have gotten to the hospital much quicker had he been found to be injured.

Wow, did this happen after they towed that coupe (Maserati?) that stopped between T3 and T4 or another time? I left after 4:30 and had no idea about the accident. What part of the track?
Glad the driver is OK.

For anybody interested in getting a cage or any welding work done in the SoCal area, contact Gary Steen. He's in Long Beach and does better work than I have ever seen.
If anybody wants to check out my cage, you are more than welcome and he's familiar with the S2000.

I have the Maserati, by the way. The problem was a computer malfunction. Dealer just had to reset it.
